Once upon a time, in the heart of the Western Kingdom, lay a beautiful garden. And there in the cool of the day was the Master of the Garden wont to walk. Of all the denizens of the garden, the most beautiful and most beloved was a gracious and noble bamboo. Year after year, Bamboo grew yet more noble and gracious, conscious of his Master's love and watchful delight, but modest, and gentle withal. "Bamboo" — the Master 's voice was grave — "l would fain take thee and — cut thee down."

A trembling of a great horror shook Bamboo. "Cut . . . me . . . down! Me . . . whom thou, Master, hast made the most beautiful in all thy garden . . . to cut me down! Ah, not that, not that. Use me for thy joy, O Master, but cut me not down."

"Beloved Bamboo" — the Master's voice grew graver still — "if I cut thee not down, I cannot use thee."

The garden grew still. Wind held his breath. Bamboo slowly bent his proud and glorious head. There came a whisper:

So did the Master of the Garden take Bamboo and cut him down and hack off his branches and strip off his leaves and cleave him in twin and cut out his heart. And lifting him gently, carried him to where was a spring of fresh, sparkling water in the midst of his dry fields. Then pulling one end of broken Bamboo in the spring and the other end into the water channel in his field, the Master laid down gently his beloved Bamboo. And the spring sang welcome and the clear sparkling waters raced joyously down the channel of Bamboo's torn body into the wailing fields. Then the rice was planted, and the days went by, and the shoots grew and the harvest came.

In that day was Bamboo, once so glorious in his stately beauty, yet more glorious in his brokenness and humility. For in his beauty he was life abundant, but in his brokenness he became a channel of abundant life to his Master's world.

Our family just returned from an 8-day trip to London -- we traveled with a group of dear friends from our church family -- and I'm hoping over the next few days to share a little about out trip.

And, yes, we did take the boys. And , no, we are not crazy.

Vince and I took our first trip to London last summer, and we took Micah with us. And I think people thought we were crazy then, as well.

So why do we take our two toddlers trekking around the world?? I thought I'd go ahead and settle that question before sharing about the trip itself. (Ha! Then you can decide for yourself, whether we're crazy...or not.)

God's Word says...Deut 11:16-21
Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and he will shut the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you. Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the Lord swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

More and more Vince and I encounter parents whose children have turned away from the Lord. And these moms and dads seems to be well-meaning and God-fearing, yet their children are disinterested in following Christ for themselves. (And I'm not talking about casual church attendance--these teens/young adults attend church--but only in body, not in spirit.) And everyone, from parents to church leadership, is wondering why the disconnect?? I could speculate, but I honestly don't have an holistic answer. But I can assume that one disconnect has lead to another disconnect.

God's Word also says...Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it.

It seems that more and more people are in agreement that parents cannot wait until their children enter their teens before beginning discipleship. Nor should families rely on the church for their children's spiritual training. One to two hours of Bible teaching per week just isn't enough. Not for our children, and not for us as parents.

We don't want to miss the "window" with our boys. We want them to look back over their lives, and say, "You know, I can't remember a time when our family wasn't worshipping or serving the Lord together."

Jesus said...Matt 12:43-45:
“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”

And we especially don't want to our children to flounder...to be worse off...as they get older because mom and dad haven't been disciplined in preaching and teaching the Gospel to them...in season and out of season...which, taking two toddlers to London may appear to be out of season.

There's just too much at stake. Satan is crouching outside our doors, waiting to destroy our children. And we're kidding ourselves if we think education, technology and SEC football are reliable guardians. There is no guardian for the souls of our children, other than the full counsel of the Word of God.

Jesus said...Matt 28:18-20:
{btw- I hate when people leave verse 18 out the Great Commission}
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

So, before you say that we're crazy, I hope you hear our hearts.

God's Word has been fixed upon our hearts, and we are attempting (by God's grace) to teach and train our children...even as we go along the road...that all authority has been given to Jesus for salvation...shutting out false teaching, and worthless idols...and that he has called us to obey all that he has commanded. To the glory of God.

Well. I intended to be back before now. But life has been consumed with raising children and soul searching. A healthy break, and a poignant reminder that my thoughts are essential to no one.

Paul, in his letter to the Ephesian church:
3:⁸To me,though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, ⁹and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, ¹⁰so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. ¹¹This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, ¹²in whom we have boldness andaccess withconfidence through our faith in him.

Our church will be observing Orphan Sunday on Nov. 6 (hope yours will be as well). I play a very limited part in what the observation will look like, but it's caused we to wonder (again) nonetheless...exactly what does it mean to care for orphans?? Now that Vince and I have completed two adoptions I ask myself this question even more deeply. So many people are doing so many wonderful things for the cause of the orphan, yet still in my own heart I had not landed upon what it should look like--until recently.

I won't take you on that journey, but here's the conclusion that God has settled in my heart: plant churches. New Testament, Gospel-driven, God-glorifying churches. And plant them in communities where sin is robbing children of their families. This is enduring, life-giving care to the orphan. As a matter of fact, plant them everywhere! Sin is claiming more than families. There possibly are organizations (and more hopefully, churches) that are doing this--I've not researched enough to know.

Paul also said:
1 Cor 15:³For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ diedfor our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, ⁴that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures...

...of first importance... is not that orphans are cared for--but that Christ is preached. And it is through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known...when God's wisdom is received and embraced, orphans will be cared for. And even greater than that, more children will remain with their birth families. I know that God is sovereign and allows all kinds of things for all sorts of reasons (ultimately for His glory)--but that doesn't mean that we just accept man's depravity, which destroys families.

Rom 6: ¹What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? ²By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? ³Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

We either live in approval of sin, or, oppose it in power with the truth of the Gospel.

And as I think about planting churches, my heart fills with sadness because so many are willing to go...and have been called to go...but there aren't enough senders. This is because we're not willing to embrace, as John Piper calls it, a war-time lifestyle. God has promised to supply the resources to accomplish His work, so it's not for lack of resources that orphans aren't cared for and that sin is reigning. The only explanation is that we are disobedient...or disbelieving. Am I crazy? (which is quite possible)

Rom 10:¹¹For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." ¹²For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. ¹³For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
¹⁴How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?And how are they to hear without someone preaching? ¹⁵And how are they to preach unless they are sent?

So. This is where I am. Taking baby-steps to embrace my war-time lifestyle...because I believe that the darkness is fading and sin is losing its power to put to shame -- and, by the grace of God, may our family proclaim the Lord of all (bestowing his riches on all who call on him).

2 Cor 10:³For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. ⁴For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but havedivine power to destroy strongholds. ⁵We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ...

oh, summer...where have you gone???

Seriously! This summer has blown by -- I suppose because our family was so focused on Judah's palate repair/recovery. We are now almost 8-weeks post Judah's palate surgery, and his healing thus far has been remarkable! At Judah's post-op visit several weeks ago, Dr Grant told me to let him run with scissors. Ha! Obviously he was being facetious, but I guess it was his way of assuring me that Judah was officially post-recovery! Judah's palate looks beautiful -- better than I could have imagined! Thank you, God!! You would never know that his palate had been cleft!! And widely cleft at that! Although, at some point his uvula did fall off--not sure when because obviously Judah swallowed it. I know...gross! But I've been told it's not a critical appendage so we're not sweating it.

Although Judah's palate is beautiful, his teeth, well, are a bit crazy! The two teeth on either side of his front teeth (incisors, canines??) are growing in through his palate--kind of behind his front teeth. Not sure how that will pan out, but we'll see his dentist in the next few weeks for some insight. I'm expecting that the misplacement of these teeth will affect Judah's speech development to some degree, but I praying not by much.

And speech...Judah is starting to make a lot of different sounds, as well attempting many new words. Although his words are hard to understand because he talks like a ventrilaquist. Not much mouth movements. I'm sure it's probably sensory due to all the changes his mouth (inside and out) has undergone, but I feel like he'll over-come all that in short order!

Judah is also on a pretty normal diet. He technically is allowed to eat anything, but we're taking it slow with crunchier foods. Because he was on soft foods for the first 22 months of his life, he never really had to chew -- so he tends to gag on crunchier/tougher things like crackers and meat. Even still, he is progressing in this area too!

And, he took his first steps this week-end!! He has totally mastered crawling, cruising and even climbing, but he's now decided he's ready to walk. And, oh, is that his personality! He will decide when it's time for a new milestone...period! He will not be rushed, when other skills are not yet mastered!! Such a funny little fella!

And our sweet Micah is doing great! Growing so fast! Vince is convinced that Micah's feet will be a big as his in the next few years! We also celebrated his 3rd birthday a few weeks ago! And he was all about his birthday this year - so it turned into a week-long celebration!! He still is consumed with all-things-music, but we have enrolled him in soccer this fall. We'll see how that goes! I think he'll enjoy it! We've been practicing making goals in the back yard, and he's very excited about the concept of playing on a team! Oh, and how could I forget...he's about 90% potty-trained. Whoot!!

We'll...I'm sure I'm leaving a ton out, but I plan to be a little more regular with our blog...so I hope you'll visit again soon!!

update: post-palate surgery

Most of you know that Judah had his palate surgery this past Wednesday. After a few long days in the hospital, we came home Friday afternoon. Recovery has gone slow -- poor Judah is absolutely miserable! His surgeon told us that Judah's repair was pretty extensive (more than most), but that's because his cleft was bilateral and very wide! (BTW- we love Judah's surgeon, Dr. John Grant, and the cleft team at Children's Hospital of AL!) We'll see Dr. Grant in about three weeks, and at that point he should see good indication of Judah's healing, or foreseeable complications. Of course, you know what we're praying for! For now, it's a soft food diet and arm restraints.

Judah's nasal cavity, palate and top of his throat were all reworked (for lack of a better term), which I'm sure is extremely painful -- but he also has a low-grade fever and what appears to be a sinus infection. Not only is he learning to breathe with a reduced air-way, his air-way is full of snot! I think the most difficult part for him is sleep, simply because he cannot breathe and therefore constantly wakes himself up.

I've also wasted more juice, milk, pediasure, pedialyte, sorbet....he just is not in the mood to eat or drink...nothing feels right in his mouth.

All that said, he's been a trooper! I really am proud of him! He sure has been through a lot in the first 20-months of his life! Gracious thanks to you who have been praying for him -- you're prayers are felt every day!!

all about judah!

It's been a really, really long time since I've posted an update about Judah...sorry!!! It's not that there isn't anything to tell...because there is! But life with two toddlers is simply busy. And blogging just doesn't make it to the top-few things I try to accomplish during my 1-2 hours of daily peace-and-quite.

So, Judah...

He's doing amazing!! I like to call him my sweetness. He's so laid back, and loves to cuddle and giggle -- and he is totally a mommy's boy! He is still playing catch-up -- but he makes progress every day! We like to joke that he's a marathoner, NOT a sprinter (like his older brother)! When he came to us in December, he knew nothing! Literally! Could not sit up, hold his bottle, feed himself...you name it! He was a 14-month old new born. But he's now doing all those things! He started crawling in April, and he should be walking by the end of the summer.

They (the professionals) say that for every month that a child is institutionalized, it will take as many subsequent months for them to catch up. So we're looking at Feb 2012 as our goal for Judah to have mastered his age-appropriate skills (well, minus speech).

His cleft lip repair has healed nicely -- though it will be several more months before the scar tissue is gone. We are now totally used to his new mouth! It's hard to remember his precious, super-wide pre-repair mouth, so I'm glad we took tons of pics before his first surgery.

His palate surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday (Lord willing). Our surgeon, Dr. John Grant (who is AMAZING) said there is a 90% chance that this will be the only palate repair Judah will need! DEAR FRIENDS- will you please pray with us that this is the case -- that God will heal Judah with this surgery! We don't ask for healing for selfish reasons, but that God would be glorified! Judah will still need a gum line bone graft when his adult teeth come in, but that's several years down the road.

Once Judah recovers from his palate surgery, we'll start to hit speech therapy pretty hard! He's so ready ready to talk (and sing)! And he already tries to repeat much of what we say! Some of his words -- mama, amen, I love you -- are actually a little intelligible.

UPDATE! As of 4/28 Mother's Day cards have raised $2440 for Trees of Glory in Ethiopia!!

I hate to admit that this is very much a season in my life where my time in the Word and deliberate prayer often wanes. That's just the way it is. Yet this afternoon, I captured a moment while the boys were napping to read a few chapters in Romans and talk with my God. A few thoughts surfaced--thoughts that have been heavy on my heart...

...is our concern for the least of these driven by impure motives...are we taking Scripture out of context, in order to prop-up do-good-deeds, because we're really just looking for an ego-trip...

So I simply asked God to examine my heart. To affirm our steps. Or to redirect our paths. We are passionate about serving the destitute and the marginalized. We're always looking for ways to do more. Not because we feel obligated, but because every need that is met is an open door for the Gospel. For physical relief and spiritual healing. Even still, the best of intentions always need to be examined before God, in the light of His Word.

After a few quite moments with the Lord, I closed my Bible. And I walked outside to check the mail. There were three envelopes inside. One about our renters insurance. Another, a thank-you note from a new mom that I had never met before, but several Believers wanted to bless her with a shower because she's not connected to a church (and I got to be apart). The third piece of mail was from HopeChest. It was a hand-written, translated letter from a child that we sponsor in Ethiopia. He told us that he is doing well, and added 'praise God.' He also wanted to know if we're coming to Ethiopia, and he asked that we pray for his school.

We've sponsored this child for over a year, and this is the first hand-written letter that we've received from him.

Can I just tell you that I was in awe. I broke down in tears as I told Vince about what just happened. I asked God to show me His heart, and test mine -- and with in a matter of minutes I found T's letter in our mail box. Coincidence? Absolutely not! Affirmation? Absolutely!

In that moment, I felt the weight of God's heart. The marginalized, destitute and fatherless do matter to Him! And He ordained in eternity-past that T's letter would be in our mailbox, to affirm our family. Wow! It's so easy to get discouraged by the noise of ridicule when it comes to Gospel social justice. Thank you, Lord, that your voice rings truer and clearer!

May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the children of the needy,
and crush the oppressor...

For he delivers the needy when he calls,
the poor and him who has no helper.

He has pity on the weak and the needy,
and saves the lives of the needy.
From oppression and violence he redeems their life,
and precious is their blood in his sight.

Now switching-gears. Kind-of. (I feel this also falls in the it-matters-to-God category) As of this afternoon, we're raise over $1200 for the Trees of Glory clean water well project. Just $300-shy of last year's total for Kind Hearts play ground equipment. What an honor is has been for me to make my simplistic cards. If you haven't joined the fundraiser, there's still time to order cards!! I will take orders through Sat, Apr 30. For all the details, see my previous post below.

You may remember, last year for Mother's Day, I teamed-up with Karen Wistrom & Kind Hearts care-point in Ethiopia (Children's HopeChest) to raise funding toward play ground equipment at the care point. We raised over $1500.00 toward the equipment! Other families also raised money via their own fundraisers, and the full balance required for the equipment was met (and even exceeded!!)! And, as in any developing country, progress can be slow--but I'm excited to share that ground has been cleared and equipment is on order for the new play ground at Kind Hearts!!

This year I'm again working with Karen to raise money toward a clean water well project at another care-point in Ethiopia, Trees of Glory. This is also a HopeChest program. I asked Karen for the nuts-and-bolts of this care point, and she shared the following:

Trees of Glory is located 2 hours north of Addis near the village of Duber. It is very rural (beautiful countryside) and the residents in this area rarely have contact with Addis.
There are currently 99 kids attending TOG - with no running water. The staff walks a mile or more to a river and to a spigot to get water and they carry it back to the care-point on the backs of donkeys. It takes a ton of time everyday and it is very labor-intensive. And they teach the kids good hygiene - to wash before meals and after the toilet - so they go through a lot of water in addition to what they drink.
Every child at TOG is sponsored - but we will need more sponsor families as more children begin to enroll. Once we have a well - TOG expects that they can care for 200-300 kids!!

WOW!! I have tears in my eyes to think that 200-300 could be ministered at Trees of Glory!!
...could...
But without access to clean water, hundreds of children are missing meals, education, and (most importantly) the opportunity to hear the Gospel!

Clean water is a tender subject for our family, especially since both our boys were born in parts of the world where clean water often is nothing more than an empty water bottle tossed along a road-side...a reminder that it's available, but not accessible. It's easy, in the comfort of America, to forget the health (and even life) that dirty water claims every day!! Not to mention the care-givers at Trees of Glory--people with a passion for the children in their community...people that God has set apart to serve the children in their community...yet, often, most of their precious daylight hours are required to fetch water. I cannot imagine how frustrating it must be to want so much more for these children!!

We raised $1500 last year....wouldn't be amazing if we could double that?? I know we can! As always, 100% of your donation will go to TOG-- I'm donating the stamps, supplies, and paypal fees!

I am so sick of heart about the unfolding changes in Ethiopian's adoption process. You can read more about that here. I'm not intending to jump the gun on the situation, and I am still hopeful that orphaned children will be united with their forever families, but...

what if...
could this be...

A wake-up call for the Christian community. Around 2500 children were adopted from Ethiopia into US families in 2010. 2500 out of 5 million. Please don't get me wrong -- every single one of those successful adoptions was nothing less than an act of God. I know this first-hand, because our Micah Yoseph coming home in 2009 was an undeniable act of God. But hear my heart...

Is it easy for us, when our adoptions are rolling along smoothing, to have tunnel-vision. To some how think that that because (in our case) I am bringing one child home, I don't really have to think long and hard about all the millions of other children who will never come home??

When adoptions are rolling smoothly, do those millions of children lose their voice?

The reality is, adoption isn't enough. We cannot put all our eggs in that basket. Americans bring home 2500 Ethiopian per year (PRAISE GOD) -- but 30,000 children DIE PER DAY in Africa! Our family ministers to the fatherless (outside of adoption), but oh, do the bread crumbs we throw under our table make our God look so small.

Not sure where I'm intending to go with all this. But what I do know for certain is that God is sovereign...even over MOWA. And I am also certain that God cares for the fatherless. ALL of them. His Word says so.

Lord, give us your eyes. Show us what you see when you look at Ethiopia. At Africa. Father, use this situation to give millions of children a voice...and quicken us, Your Children, to be listening.

For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing- Deut 10:17-18

Judah is doing well! I think his post-op pain has paled greatly in
comparison to his not getting to suck his thumb! Which has made for
some long, long nights! Thankfully, he's pretty content during the day!
And I still cannot get over how different he looks! I know he'll be
swollen for a while, but I just didn't realize that his lip surgery
would affect the shape of his entire face. And his face still has no
expression...not sure when he'll be able to smile again. It will
probably take a few months before his muscles heal completely...at
that point we'll have a better idea of what he really looks like.

We're home!
Poor Judah is so swollen! It's hard to imagine that he'll ever look normal, but I'm trusting that he will.
On another note, our surgeon warned me that because the cleft in his palate is so wide, surgery may be somewhat unpredictable. Oh dear...but can't worry about that now...

Good morning! We had a great night! J slept with me on the couch--
yes! He actually slept! He's eating well and playful! The Drs
already came by to discharge him, but we'll still be here til about
10am.

We've got our baby! And we're in our room! Poor little man is out of
it! And his heart rate is really elevated, which has me concerned.
Please continue to pray for his recovery! The goal for tonight is to
get him awake and eating. Vince has gone home to check on M. If
all goes well, we'll be discharged first thing in the morning.

Surgery is over! Both J's surgeon and ENT came to give us a report.
The surgeon seems pleased with the lip repair, but I'm expecting J to
look like he got pounded in the face with a baseball bat. He also
said Judah did great before surgery...no tears!! Proud of him!
The ENT said J's ears were a mess -- which may explain his
restlessness at night.
J will be in recovery for about 1-2hrs, then we'll be assigned our
room. Can't wait to see him! Praying he doesn't totally freak out
once he wakes!!

Judah finally went back for surgery about 10:40am. He was such a
trooper this morning, despite missing his oatmeal and bananas! He
played and giggled, and even napped for a little bit. Then a Chinese
guy (quite fitting) from the OR came to get him. It was a bit weird
handing him over to some stranger in a hallway! The mommy-in-me
wanted to demand that I go with him and monitor the entire process!
Mommies know better than surgeons...right?!
Dr. Grant's staff just called the waiting room to let us know he is
beginning Judah's procedure, and the anesthesia is successful. We're
expecting the lip repair to last a few hours (did I mention he's
getting ear tubes as well?). I'll update after surgery is complete.
We feel so honored to be Judah's mommy and daddy, and to care for all
his needs! Is the Lord calling you to minister to the fatherless?
You will never regret being Christ's hands and feet to the least of
these!

Judah will have his first surgery tomorrow - the plastic surgeon will repair his lip. The surgery will last a few hours, and I will stay the night with Judah at the hospital. However, I'm not as anxious about his surgery as I suppose that I should be. One reason is because I am anxious about his palate surgery, which will be more invasive and require longer recovery. A second reason that my heart is at peace is simply because of a knowledge of God's sovereignty. When I think about how God protected and delivered our children long before we became their parents...well...I am reminded that God is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think.

We've been a family of four-for just over two months now. I had high aspirations that when we returned from China I'd be able to whip out a Christmas card, or at least a New Year's Card. Nope. Didn't happen. I haven't even sent out adoption announcements either. What a slacker, I am!
Nonetheless, it was way past time for a new family portrait! Especially since Judah's lip surgery is fast approaching! I cannot imagine not having a few family shots with his sweet heaven-sent smile!!

Sometimes thoughts do somersaults in my mind...round, and round, and round...

Ever since Egypt's revolution hit the media last week, my thoughts have been consumed with the situation. Not sure why this story is different to me...the world has been a mess for a long, long time. Still, I'm just disturbed.
Maybe I'm not so disturbed with what is happening, as much as I am with what started it all. Obviously the protesters are dissatisfied with their country's leadership. But one component of their frustration stems from their flailing economy.

And this is the truth that makes my stomach turn.
Our own government is flailing (at best), as well. Yet, we have access to a band-aide called credit. And we (our gov) continues to dump borrowed money into the US market, all the while, driving up inflation world-wide. We, as Americans, feel only a tinge of the inflation so it's easy to not be concerned. In America, we spend 10% of our income to eat three meals per day. But in developing countries, families are spending 50% of their income to eat 1-2 meals per day. The poor stay marginalized. The hungry get hungrier. Starving for food. Isolated from Truth.

I guess I'm struggling because things seem so hopeless -- yet, I am a Believer, therefore hope should be mine. I struggle with the injustices I see...I feel guilty. Not so much because I have, and they don't. But because I believe the lie that it's all hopeless...I do nothing.

Here's another struggle. What can I do? What should I do? What should the North American church be doing? Are we asking ourselves...asking God...these questions? For the small percentage who are asking, are you asking believing there is an answer?

Sorry to unload here. But I rarely find anyone who wants to talk about these things...much less pray about them. Most don't want to know...don't care.

So...I don't know about you, but we seriously have spring fever here at the Martin home! Seems it's either too cold or too wet to go outside -- and besides, I'm trying to keep Judah healthy for his lip surgery.

Being bored-silly has really got me thinking about what I'd like to do this spring/summer with the boys!

1st on the agenda is to plant a garden! I personally never have had my own garden. Vince and I have always enjoyed landscaping and working in the yard together, but I never really had a burning-desire to plant a garden. (Isn't funny how children change everything!) I can remember while growing-up, my step-dad planted a few veggie gardens -- but I was never really involved in the process.

I think Micah is at the perfect age to peak his interest in gardening! He loves digging in dirt, and, he's starting to show an interest in learning the what, how & why about things! Time to capitalize! Since we're leasing our home (and...um...I probably shouldn't dig-up the yard), I'll only be able to have a container garden. But I think that will work perfectly for our needs! I think we'll start with tomatoes, peppers and maybe onions, since I cook with those veggies several times a week.

I found a great site to help me get going, called My First Garden! We're going to start with seeds indoors, then move our plants to the containers when it's time.

I'm kind of excited!!

Now that we've been home with Judah for just over 5 weeks, I've had some time to realize a thing, or two...

When we switched our China application from a healthy adoption to the waiting children list, some minor anxieties accompanied that switch. However because we were open to a variety of special needs, we really had no idea what to expect, so the anxieties were initially minimal.

Our agency, from the beginning, seemed fairly certain that we would be matched with an infant boy with cleft lip/cleft palate -- simply because that is one of the more common needs. So I researched cl/cp, but much of the info I found seemed so vague. I guess that's because cl/cp varies dramatically from one child to the next. It's not a this-is-what's-wrong-and-this-is-how-you-fix-it birth defect. Yes - some children's clefts are that straight-forward, but, most are not!

Anyway...

When we were matched with Judah in July...and I saw his sweet face...and his sweet cleft...I began to wonder what this would mean for our family. What would it be like? Parenting a child that looks different...talks different -- a child that needs multiple surgeries, and possibly years of speech therapy. Would his needs affect my love toward him? Would his needs be an inconvenience? Would his birth defects be embarrassing?

Yes. Let's be real. Those questions crossed my mind. No. I wasn't expecting the answers to be yes -- but I still couldn't help but wonder what would it be like.

I'm sure most families contemplating a special needs adoption ask themselves those same questions.

Yet, five weeks post- Judah's placement I can answer those questions with a resounding NO! From the first moment Judah was in our arms, both his cleft lip and palate faded into the background. It's not that we didn't see his clefts -- we did! We even did a little poking around to examine to extent of his clefts. But his clefts were not, and still are not, a distraction. We have no aversion to his sweet little mouth, or to the oatmeal that he sneezes out of his nose every morning!

The way he was born has actually endeared him to me!
Wow! Who expected that! ?

And with his lip surgery approaching in March, I now have a new anxiety! My sweet boy won't look the same -- oh, how I love his little mouth just the way it is! I love when he tries to give me a kiss, and only his bottom lip puckers out (because his top lip doesn't work quite right). I love the oatmeal out the nose!! Never embarrassed by it!! Love his two crazy front teeth -- the hope of hiding them behind a new and improved lip never crosses my mind!!

Everything about him couldn't feel more normal, or more perfect, to me!

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures- James 1:17-18

Well. In case you couldn't tell, I needed a blog break! With all the newness of Judah, blogging was ruthlessly shoved to the end of the line. But, oh dear, now I don't even know where to begin to catch you up.

Horrible.
Survivable.
Just OK.
Much better.

How about we skip the first three and just start with much better?
We are doing much better! Judah has been home almost a month, which I can hardly believe! He is doing so well! As a matter of fact, I laid him in his crib earlier at nap time, and he didn't even scream! Many of you know this is a big deal!! He picked up his teddy bear to play (this is even a praise, because at first he didn't even know what to do with a teddy bear), and now I think he's asleep!!
Thank you Jesus!

Judah is still taking formula, but he has begun eating everything that I am eating! Literally! Grabbing it off my plate! Rice, noodles, chicken, bread, soup, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, chocolate cake... I'm so proud of my little fella! When we were in China he had no idea how to use his tongue, but now he's got it mastered!

We had prelim visits with our plastic surgeon and dentist, and here's the run-down:
-his lip surgery is 3/2/2011; he's required to stay one night at the hospital
-his palate surgery will take place sometime late summer/early fall
-his gum surgery will take place sometime between the ages of 7-10 (when his adult teeth begin to come in)

About teeth...we're not sure what's hidden behind his gums. He could have missing teeth, damaged teeth, or extra teeth. Our dentist will take a panoramic x-ray after Judah's palate is healed, and go from there. Our dentist feels pretty certain he's missing both upper canines, since that where both clefts are located. But, who really knows.

Judah can now also sit up! And he loves being on his tummy, if a piano is in reach! And he can push-up on all four's and rock as well. Oh, and swat and kick big brother when he gets annoyed with him ;)

Speaking of Micah, he's adjust fine -- taking aside typical 2-year old issues, like sharing. No need to go there. But we are making progress. Micah also tells me he loves me about a billion times a day -- just needing a little re-affirmation that mommy loves him too! And mommy sure does! The one thing that never wearies me is the back-and-forth hugs and kisses! I never run out of hugs and kisses for these boys!

We've really come so far in such a short amount of time. And I give full credit to the prayer of God's people and God's perfect grace!!

Well...at least in-body...our minds are still somewhere in la-la land! Exhausted does not even begin to describe our family! And thanks to our friend jet-lag, Judah was up at 1:30 am...and he stayed up all night! Fun! Our precious SIL, Kim, took over at 4:30 am so we could sneak a few hours of sleep.
I took Micah to the DR this morning--double-ear infxn, and serious junk in his lungs. Judah goes to the Int'l DR on Mon & Ped on Wed--he has Micah's same cough, and now a low-grade fever! Plus, another tooth broke the skin today...poor thing is so miserable!

We made it G'zhou late Fri night, then had Judah's medical exam on Saturday. Sunday morning we did a little shopping, and then had really hoped to hang-out with some friends from Hunter Street who live in G'zhou...but, those plans got canceled. Micah had a low-grade fever and nasty cough on Sat night, and then on Sun afternoon the fever came back and the cough got worse. By Sun evening Micah's temp was 102. We've talked with two Drs in the US, and both seem to think it's a viral infection -- so not much we can do, other than lay-low in our room & keep his fever down. We do have some Bactrim for him, but both Drs have advised holding-off on using that. And I concur, Bactrim is nasty stuff! I've had terrible side-effects from it! Yuck!

Meanwhile, Judah has started coughing and is refusing to eat. He doesn't really have fever, but he does have a mouthful of teeth coming in. Good grief!

Judah seems to be content with us. He was obviously very spoiled by the nannies at his orphanage! He wants to be held all the time -- oh, and not just held, we must be standing too. He's also becoming a picky eater. I can't tell you how much formula & baby food I've wasted because he wasn't in the mood for whatever option he was given. I've got my work cut out for me when we get home!!

This afternoon we have our Consulate appt/oath taking ceremony. Tomorrow we're supposed to go sight-seeing -- I really hope we can make it! We're also supposed to see the Bunches tomorrow night, which we're really looking forard to, since we missed them on Sun!!

We're headed to Guangzhou to finish up our trip -- a much warmer climate. Our time in Lanzhou has been great, but it's been very cold -- which has meant too much time in our hotel room! We're trying to keep both the boys healthy. Micah is a little stir-crazy -- us too! But, we're all hanging in there!

We're also the only adoptive family in this province from AWAA. We had a free day yesterday to walk the streets. Let me just say, we are VERY conspicuous -- lot's of stares! The people are friendly enough, but we do feel a bit out of place. We haven't seen any Westerners -- maybe they're more visitors here during the summer months. Although, we did meet an adoptive family from Holland. We're ready to see our American friends & do some shopping!

We've been in Lanzhou since Sun night. Lanzhou is the capitol city of Gansu province, the province where Judah was born. And abandoned. Lanzhou was a primary city on the Silk Road, and is home to representative populations from most of China's ethnic groups. The Silk Road was also an open-door for Buddism and Islam to penetrate this area.

Sun night when we exited our airplane, and walked into the Lanzhou airport -- we were quite surprised to find it completed packed with Muslims (identified by the white cap that the Muslim men in this area wear). They were waiting to greet and celebrate with friends/family who we're returning from some type of Muslim pilgramage. Lanzhou is home to many Buddist temples and Islamic mosques -- there's even an autonimous region in this city where Muslims have certain freedoms from government regulation. However, according to our guide who lives here, there is no Evangelical presense. She herself (28) claims no religion.

That said, I have found it interesting to walk into almost any type of business here and see Christmas decorations. Christmas trees, Santas, bells...you name it. Oh, and the Christmas music that is usually blaring over the speakers.

But more than interesting, I find it so very sad. And I've been filled with an angst since we've been here. There's nothing more sad than to see a copy-cat, pagan celebration of Jesus' birth. The Christmas decor almost magnifies the darkness.

And even more sad still, is the missed-opportunity that the Western Christian church has had to celebrate and share Christ during this very sacred time of year. We've, instead, traded the Truth for Santa...and traded God's glory for the glory of ourselves and our children. And we have taught our practices even to people here in China.

We've pretended for so long that we, as Believers, can ride the fence...that we can taint our Savior's birth with pagan practices, and yet not deny His renown. But I see here, now, in this city that we have denied God's renown -- especially as I watch the spiritually-dead hang garland on trees and wear stockings on their heads -- all the while, remaining under God's wrath.

There's Christmas everywhere, yet no understanding or knowledge of God's redemption and grace, nor His holiness or glory. As I watch millions upon millions walk around this city, dead in their trespasses, I can't help but feel a deep call to repentance. And I can't help but wonder if the church were listening, would we hear God calling us to a collective repentance as well.

The Martin-4 are doing well! I've been trying to upload photos, but the dsl is too slow. Thank you all for leaving comments--Vince & I really enjoy reading them!
Judah is doing great! He has warmed-up to us--especially Vince! I think he's going to be a daddy's boy! Micah is doing well with the transition too! He was so sweet this morning...Judah was crying, and Micah said 'he misses his family'. What insight for a 2-yr old. I told Micah that we're Judah's family now, he 'oh yeah'. So sweet!
A little about Judah...he is a porker! Vince & I just can't get over that! I brought him size 2 diapers...but his thighs are too big! Now his length, on the other hand, is only between a 6-9 mos old. And his gross motor skills are way under-developed--he cannot even sit up. But I'm sure he'll catch up fast. He's also still on a bottle -- we've tried some baby food, but he's going to have to learn to eat with his palate-challenges. We may wait to tackle that at home.
I also cannot believe how long it takes for the 4 of us to get ready in the morning!! Seriously! Crazy! I cannot even imagine going somewhere by myself with just the 2 boys...um, play-dates at the Martin's for the next 8-12 months! :)
Oh, and Chinese people love Micah! Everyone talks to him--and of course he likes to show-off the Chinese that he's picked up--they love that! All the girls take pics with him, and even feed him while we're out to dinner! I'm loving it!!

Quick update!

What a crazy 30 hrs! We had a busy day in Beijing (church, Forbidden City, Tienanmen Square) yesterday, then took a 2+ hour flight to Lanzhou, and met Judah at 10pm last night! Both of the boys slept great, then we had our civil affairs appointment today to finalize the adoption. Finally at noon, we returned to the hotel and crashed for several hours.

Micah is doing great! And Judah is a sweetheart -- a very easy-going baby. Who likes to eat, I might add! He is a total roly-poly! I couldn't believe it!

God is most gracious!

I'm sitting on a plane, headed to Seattle, to catch our flight to
Beijing...thanking God for all who helped this journey a reality!
Funny how before we headed out to bring Micah home, I couldn't blog
enough -- but this time around I am finding myself at a loss for
words. I guess instead of channeling my anxiety into words, I've been
channeling it into cuddles with my sweet Micah. Even as I watch him
sleep next to me on the plane...it's hard to let him be...I so want to
hold him close!
Yet we're so excited to be united with Judah -- but anxious as well.
We've not seen a pic of him or had an update since July. I have no
idea what to expect!! Is he still small, or has he grown? Crawling?
Walking? Talking? What will we find? What will we see when we look
into his eyes?

My stomach is in knots!! But soul is calm...you're prayers are felt!!

I could (and probably should) name the laundry-list of blessings from God that I am thankful for. But, it is easy for me to get lost is the blessings of God...blessings of stuff and people...and omit the Ultimate Blessing.

Includes in the definition of "child," and thus in the exemption from required admissions vaccination documentation, certain children who have been adopted in a foreign country that is a signatory to the Hague or who are emigrating from such a country for U.S. adoption.

china travel update

I've been waiting to post an update, in hopes of having exciting news
to share -- but since we're not sure when to expect our travel
approval, here's an update, before the update :)

Our agency felt like we might receive our travel approval from China
at the end of last week -- but they now think we could be waiting
another 1-2 weeks. And depending on when consulate appointments are
available, it could be mid-Dec before we leave.

We are eager to get to China, we're eager to hold Judah, and eager
just to have solid dates -- but that said, our hearts are at rest in
the Lord. He has shown our family immeasurable kindness throughout
this process...and we trust fully the He will complete His work in
pefect timing!

China is one of the most remarkable, beautiful places that I have ever traveled to -- the rich culture and breath-taking landscape are unlike any other place in the world! We are so proud to have a son from this region. And although we've never been to Gansu province, I have been reading that it is even more enchanting. Our little boy is from Qingyang City (which means celebration), however when we travel to his province we will stay in the capital, Lanzhou. This is where we will have our Gotcha Day. With a nanny and the orphanage director, little Judah will take a 6+ hour van ride from Qingyang to Lanzhou...and, then be plopped into our arms. I expect it to be a traumatic day for him.

I've had tons of questions about when are we going to China!!! Well, that is a great question! But, here's what we know:

-our I-797 Notice of Action (this is our US visa approval to bring Judah to the US) was forwarded to the US Consulate in China last week
-the US Consulate in China gives our paperwork (Judah's visa application) one, final stamp of approval -- then they forward the papers on to the CCAA (China Center of Adoption Affairs)
-once the CCAA receives our paperwork from the Consulate, they send our travel approval to our agency
-with travel approval in-hand, our agency begins coordinating our travels to/in China -- we will leave for China 2-4 wks after travel approval
-the above process should only require a few weeks!!

Our yard sale was a huge success!! Our goal was to raise enough money to cover Micah's expenses for our trip to China (~$2500), and we reached our goal!! We are thrilled! We COULD NOT not have done it without all the generous contribution of "stuff" from our church family -- nor, could we have reached our goal without our precious friends around the world who gave monetary donations!!

The orphanage fee is actually around $5000, and helps fund China's social welfare institutes--the what/where that many Chinese boys and girls call home (includes care-givers, food, medical care, and other basic necessities).

celebrating judah!

Judah's 1st birthday is Oct 2! Oh, how we hate to miss this very special milestone! He should receive the care package (pictured above) by the end of the week!! He will see our faces for the very first time ever!!
The package is already in China, and you can see that the letter we sent to him has already been translated into Chinese. A nanny will read it to him very soon. It makes my heart ache to imagine the confusion that his little mind may experience when he sees our photos, and hears our letter to him...that we are his family, and we're coming to get him.
We've also ordered a birthday cake, that will be delivered to the orphanage, so the staff and children can celebrate his special day with him! Of course, our family will have a party for him, too -- on this side of the globe!

As the time draws near for us to travel to China, I'm trying to remind myself of some of the realities we faced in Micah's adoption. Time to put my game face on, so to speak.

The adoption journey--for the most part, and for most people--is a very gratifying experience. You're surrounded by cheerleaders. People are praying for your adoption, they are supporting your fundraisers, you even have a blog fan club (well, I never achieved that status)...you're in constant contact with other adoptive families, who are sending Bible verses, and packing lists your way. It's great...thrilling!!

Yes. There are major headaches along the way with paperwork, social workers, finances--and yet, somehow, the headaches almost fuel the gratification. Because every hurtle that is over-come becomes a victory celebration with your cheerleaders!

And then comes the adrenaline-high of traveling to your child(red)...holding them so close and so tight for the first time! Soaking in the feel of their skin, the smell of their hair...their breath on your neck, their heart pounding against yours. One of the most beautiful experiences in all of life.

You're soaking-in their birth country. And making new, best friends with your travel buddies...and then...

You come home.
You're jet-lagged.
Your son/daughter(s) is jet-lagged.
They don't understand what you're saying because you cannot speak their native tongue.
There's no one/nothing in their lives that's familiar.
They're afraid.
They're confused.

You see, as you're spending months/years preparing for son/daughter(s), what's happening in their lives is very different. If they're older, they're are likely grieving great loss -- if they're younger, they're likely attaching/bonding with a nanny/foster parent. Either way, they're in survival mode.

And they probably don't have many cheerleaders.

So. With all that said, I will leave you with a blog post that I wrote last year about what we experienced the first several weeks home with Micah. This is what I am preparing for...

surprising difficulties of international adoption, #4

The final surprise (at least, that I'm sharing in this series) that we experienced with Micah happened during our first several weeks with him.

Again, the best comparison I can make is to that of an engagement. Over the years, Vince and I have had the privilege of counseling engaged couples as they prepare for marriage. And the reality is for most couples, their unfolding marriage is not what they were expecting...sometimes it's better, easier than expected...but, most often it's much more difficult. Difficult doesn't equal bad. Difficult simply reflects the fact that humans are physically, emotionally and spiritually-complex beings -- therefore, marriage is a complex institution. Multi-dimensional.

The same goes for bringing a child into your family through adoption. (NOTE: even though we do not have biological children, families who do have bio children have also experienced this scenario that I am about to describe with their adopted children.)

Prior to meeting your child/ren, you've bonded with their photos...and you've bonded with the child that your imagination has created. It is impossible to predict personality and temperament from pictures, so your mind connects a personality and temperament to the child/ren according to how you brain reads the limited data captured on film.

The real child is much different than the two-dimensional, glossy child. Much more complex.

You've been full-steam ahead...focused intensely on meeting your sweet child. Um, well, your imagined child, that is. But when you're united, the imagined child crashes into the real child -- and you immediately enter what is best described as a fog.

Once you're back to the familiarity of your own home, you do emerge from the fog. But not really as mommy, more like baby-sitter -- because you do not know this child.

I think I read about this phenomenon in adoptive-parenting books. But like the dreamy-eyed lover, I must have ignored all that I read because this stage caught me off-guard. I truly felt like Micah's baby-sitter. Jet-lag and Micah's anxiety about his new surroundings didn't help matters either. I grieved and experienced intense guilt because of what I was feeling: was there something wrong with me because I did not have an instantaneous and deep emotional bond with him??

The answer is: NO!!!

What I was experiencing was completely normal. Social workers affirmed that it was normal. Other adoptive families who were united with their children after us also experienced the very same thing. Now, I know some of you who are reading this are thinking: Nope! Won't be me. I'll just read more books, pray harder. I will instantly bond with my children. None of this "baby-sitter" nonsense for me. All I can say is, keep me posted. Let me know if you do by-pass the baby-sitter season. Well, never mind -- don't bother. I probably won't believe you. I'll probably just attribute your victory to a "referral euphoria" relapse.

I don't share this (or surprises #1-3) to scare you, or deter you. It's just the way it is. You will over-come each surprise that you experience in your adoption...some later than sooner. But you will be stronger, more informed because of each surprise you encounter. So don't dread them, or even worse, deny them...embrace them. You are human -- your child/ren is human. All human relationships develop in a linear fashion -- and include the linear elements of time and experience. And this will hold true for your adoption...it will hold true for you, and your child. So give yourself, and your child, time and space to grow.

That's what adoption is: the process of fulfilling a life-long commitment. Through your obedience to your commitment, life-long blessing will follow.

it costs HOW MUCH??

Several people have sent me emails and FB's about our China adoption expenses. Some people simply want to know how much we still owe, others are curious adoption costs in-general, and a few wanted to know if there is a difference in costs between an Ethiopian and China adoption. So, I'll do my best to answer those questions in this post.

First, let me say that adoption is expensive! Some have suggested that it's not right for a family to pursue an adoption if they don't have all the funds necessary to complete the adoption. Of course, I do not agree! If that's the case, people should not buy cars, houses, boats, vacation homes, or even take vacations if they can't pay cash.
See my point?
We don't carry debt on a house (because we rent) and we don't have car loans (paid them off...thank you, LORD!). But we will probably carry debt from this adoption. And we're 100% ok with that. We'd rather carry debt for our boys to have a home, versus a fancy car to have a drive way. We know that is not everyone's choice...and that's ok, too...but it's our choice.

Back to adoption costs.

On average, the adoption of one child from Ethiopia or China will cost about $25,000-30,000. Some state fees and agency fees vary. Airfare and travel fees vary as well.

From this point forward in our China adoption we will spend about $18,000 (no, we do not have this full amount) to bring Judah home.
-airfare (3 going, 4 coming home) ~$5,000-6,000
-lodging, eating and 4 domestic flights (4 people) in China (2 week stay) ~$5,000-6000
-orphanage donation/misc. fees in China ~$7,000
(the above estimates could be even higher because we may be traveling to China during the 2010 Asian Games)

To get to this point in our adoption, we've spent almost $12,000 -- that includes fees for home study report/state fees, USCIS (Dept of Homeland Security) paperwork, and agency fees. Not to mention that much of the paperwork must be mailed via courier, which is $30-60 a pop!

So you can see, it adds-up quickly.

The difference between Ethiopia & China fees?
Two of the biggest differences are:
-Ethiopia requires two trips, China is only one trip -- the cost break-down is still similar because you're in China for 2 wks, and have 3-4 additional flights while in-country
-Ethiopia's program fee (which is paid at DTE) is ~ $7,500, but China's program fee (although not paid until in-country) is ~ $7,000 as well.

You can shop-around for agencies, but the reality is, the cost is going to come out the same. Some agencies charge different fees for different things at different times...but it often comes out only within $1,000-3,000 difference. Again, airfare plays a big role in this.

Air miles are also another option -- I think we have enough American Airline miles to cover one round-trip flight to China, but, if we needed to change our return flight for any reason, I think we'd be charged for a full-price ticket (and I hear they stick it to ya)...so, not sure we're brave enough to use them, but we're going to discuss the option with our agency when we start booking flights.

Can I just say, WOW!!

We've have been so pleasantly surprised & touched by the number of families who've offered to donate items for our yard sale!! Piles of stuff (really nice stuff, I might add) has already been delivered to our home, with much more on it's way!

I originally intended to do a Saturday sale only, but I am now contemplating a Fri/Sat sale. Those of you with yard sale experience in B'ham...give me some advice!!

Maltbie D. Babcock, 1901 -- While a pastor in Lockport, New York, Babcock liked to hike in an area called “the escarpment,” an ancient upthrust ledge near Lockport. It has a marvelous view of farms, orchards, and Lake Ontario, about 15 miles distant. It is said those walks in the woods inspired these lyrics. The title recalls an expression Babcock used when starting a walk: “I’m going out to see my Father’s world.”

Micah asks to listen to this song everytime we get in the car! He says, "Mommy, listen to My Fadders Word!!!" So Sweet. The song is on a CD that came with the book, Hymns for a Kid's Heart. (Thanks, DeDe & Chelley, for the recommendation!)

A few people have asked "why Judah?" when we tell them the English name we are giving our Chinese son. So I thought I'd share why Judah, and why Micah.

J U D A H
The Hebrew word for Judah is Yehudah.
It means praised.
What Leah said about the 4th son she bore to Jacob: And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” Therefore she called his name Judah. (Gen 29:35)

M I C A H
The Hebrew word for Micah is Mikayehu.
It means who is like God?
Micah, the prophet, said: Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever,
because he delights in steadfast love. (Micah 7:18)

And, not to mention, Jesus is from the tribe of Judah--and, Micah prophesied about Jesus' birth.

Micah started weekday preschool today (although, I don't like to call it preschool...he's 2, for crying-out-loud). Even though he'll only attend 2x per week, I was still not looking forward to today. But...it was fine -- he had fun...he likes his teacher and made several new friends.
The most difficult transition for Micah will be nap-time. Until today, he was an early napper -- he was so tired on the way home that he just screamed and screamed. No crying, just screaming. Almost like a night-terror. Poor fella!

Let's just call this a lazy post...

I was going through Micah's baby clothes, picking out what will be size/season appropriate for Judah, when I found this 6 mo-onesie with Mickey Mouse...well...Micah just absolutely had to wear it. Can you believe I actually got it over his head!!

Judah's care package...which is probably still in-transit to China. It included a rattle, snuggly, photo album, disposable camera (that will hopefully be returned to us with pics of Judah, taken by the nannies), a letter to Judah, and some sweets for the nannies & Ann at Red Thread.

AWAA's Africa Reunion was this weekend in Nashville! We had a great time connecting with familiar & new families! I'd post more pics, but my camera is junk...and, so are the pics. Boo!! The highlight of the weekend was discovering that...WE'RE NORMAL!! Meaning Micah's stubborn, persistent, bossy, presumptuous, sometimes mean, personality is not a result of my bad-parenting. 98% of the ET adoptive families have our same struggles! The reality is, our Ethiopian children are survivors...they're fighters (not meaning violent, but strong-willed)...it's just in their DNA! And I thank God for that! May he use Micah's determination to His glory!

The AWAA reunion families went to church on Sat night -- Micah & I sat outside during worship because he wasn't too cool with going to an unknown nursery. As we were walking around, I saw this stone. Micah immediately walked over, place his hand on it, and began praying aloud. I know he was praying because he said amen several times. Not sure what he was praying for...maybe thanking God, because inscribed on the stone was this:

We need your help with our bring Judah home garage sale!!
Sat, Oct 2nd!!!
(BTW- Oct. 2, 2010 is Judah's 1st birthday!!)

And can I just say, first, that I detest garage sales! I'm not good at them -- I have friends who make $$$$ from theirs, but I usually walk away with maybe $$. I just don't have the knack.

That said, I am sensing a renewed enthusiasm for this particular garage sale...for obviously reasons! :)

Anyway, we seriously need your help! Because we've moved three times in the last two years, we are running majorly low on stuff to sell -- SO WE NEED YOUR JUNK!! Many of you have already committed to donate items, and thank you! But we need even more people to donate! It's going to take a lot of stuff to reach our goal for this sale!!

We're hoping to raise $2500-3000 from this sale. (Don't laugh! I'm serious!)

That's the amount needed for Micah to travel with us to China to get his brother!! This will be our miracle garage sale! Who knows...maybe someone who's reading this post will want to sponsor Micah's trip to get Judah (I believe God is that big...He did some amazing things to bring Micah home!!). Then we could use the proceeds from our sale toward other remaining adoption expenses! Just throwing the idea out there...

I'm also hoping to have a sweets-sale at our garage sale! So...if you don't have items to donate, maybe you'd like to make cookies/sweets!! We're open to any other fund-raising strategies that worked for you as well! The sooner we can get your items, the better, so I can start organizing. food dye intolerance?

If you have experience with this phenomenon, I'd love to hear from you! I am beginning to think Micah possibly has an intolerance to food dyes. Lately, there have been times when his behavior is out of control. I've been trying to blame it on the terrible-two's, but both Vince and I became convinced today that there had to be another culprit. That's when I remembered some other adoptive mom's talking about the effects of food dyes on their children.

Micah's diet is fairly healthy/natural (no candy!!), but...Publix recently had a certain brand of yogurt bye-one-get-one-free, which I purchased. The yogurt looks and tastes like candy, which I thought was ridiculous to begin with -- I had already decided not to purchase that variety again. But tonight I decided to check-out the ingredients, and...bingo!

So, I did some quick research...out of curiosity. Sure enough, the two most suspicious food dyes are in this yogurt!!

THE! YOGURT! IS! GONE!!!!!!!

Please, let me know if there are other foods that I need to be on the look-out for!! I want my son back!

I am unashamed to be a Follower of Jesus.
I am unashamed to be an adoptive-mommy.
I am unashamed of my sons.
I am unashamed of my husband.
I am unashamed that we can't keep up with the Joneses.
I am unashamed that I don't fit. That I don't match.

Each of the statements above are not meant to be a brag. It has been through many tears and even more sanctifying days, weeks and years that I can speak those sentences. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain- 1 Cor 15:10

Let me ask you this.

Have you ever had a feeling like, you don't belong? Not a pity-party...just a simple feeling, that, you don't belong?

I feel that way from time to time. And this feeling always gives me an out-of-body-experience (well, kind of). Makes me ask myself, what am I doing? why don't I fit? am I even suppose to fit?

I suppose many Followers of Christ ask themselves these questions. (Well, probably the whole world asks these questions--but, sadly, they are looking in all the wrong places for answers.)

For me, the context that I ask myself these questions is: North America, southeastern US, Bible-belt, land of the SEC, land of give-me-football-or-give-me-death, suburbia.

And while I am asking who am I, in the a fore mentioned context, what comes to mind is this:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect- Rom 12:2
If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you- John 15:9
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds- Eph 4:17
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God- James 4:4
And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever- 1 John 2:17

I don't intentionally turn to these verses (and others like them), the Holy Spirit does that. Yet, do you see the conflict that causes my pause?
...$30,000 cars...the world is passing away...football is king...therefore the world hates you...education trumps holiness...do not be conformed to this world...$75 blue jeans...enemy of God...granite counter-tops...discern what is the will of God...401Ks...futility of their minds

UGH!

I want different.
I don't want to be content with this inner-conflict -- surely inner-conflict is God's beginning place and not His ending point. Right?
I want other. Not sure what that is, or where it leads. (Although I am quite certain my idea of different does not involve being cool -- I'm so weary of cool) I just know that I want it--for myself, and for my family. Not sure how to get there either, but I have a idea that (for me) it begins with a thankful heart. It begins with trusting God. It begins with being broken. It begins with being unashamed of God's lot for my life.

So here I am. Unashamed. Ready for other. Father, make known to me the path of LIFE in this life!!

RA and kid-talks-orphans

In Wal-Mart today, I had the following *precious* conversation with a beautiful little Hispanic girl (maybe 7 or 8 yrs old) ahead of us in the check-out line. Although, her first question was actually, "Is that a boy or a girl?"

Little Girl: Is that your son?

Me: Yes, he is!

Little Girl: I'm just asking, 'cuz he's brown and you're white.

Me: Uh-huh.

Little Girl: He must be brown like his daddy.

Me: Actually, he was adopted by us.

Little Girl: Was he like an orphan?

Me: Yes, he was.

Little Girl: Did he live in an orphanage?

Me: Yes, he did.

Little Girl: You adopted an orphan!!!

Me: Well, he's not an orphan anymore! He has a mommy and a daddy now!

Little Girl: Awwww. He's beautiful.

Her mother then chimed-in, saying isn't that a good thing they did, and then whisked her away before the little girl could begin with a hundred more questions.

We also received the hard-copy of our Referral Approval confirmation, which we immediately signed, and will mail to China tomorrow (via our agency)! The RA basically says that China (the CCAA) approves us to adopt Judah Fu Xue, and requires our signature as evidence that we still intend to adopt him. I still have more paperwork to complete this week, regarding visas and travel...but, I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!

It was interesting to me to read that Elizabeth was buried in Hampstead, Church Row, London, England. We actually were blessed to prayer walk Church Row Street in Hampstead -- I wonder if that's the same area? We obviously did not see Elizabeth's grave, but we did get see many other hallowed places were saints-of-old walked, ministered, and died (often for their faith in Christ)!

I am praying even right now that the words of this hymn and God's Truth would give life to those walking in darkness on Church Row, in Hampstead, and in greater London.

Here he is!!

The newest (soon-to-be) Martin addition! We received our referral acceptance (RA) from China today -- I was in total shock!! We are beyond thrilled! And, it looks like we could travel as soon as mid-Nov!! We are so proud of our little boy,
and can't wait to go get him!!

news about Judah?

Many of you have asked if we've received any updates on Judah -- and, we have not. I'm not sure when to expect an update either. But it definitely won't be before we receive our RA (referral approval). We've been waiting 21 days for our RA (the average wait time being 45-60 days).

Once we receive our RA from Ch*na, then we will be able to request an update on Judah, as well as send him a care-package. For Micah, we were able to send care-packages with other families traveling to Ethiopia to pick-up their children. This was because, in Ethiopia, children who are being adopted go into the care of the placing-agency. This is not the case in Ch*na. Judah will remain in his orphanage.

And with China, it's highly unusual for families to visit the orphanages. So, we will have to use an agency like Blessed Kids, or Red Thread to send him something (cost is $20-100+...yikes). It is a bit pricey, but something we really want to do! Especially since we'll miss Judah's 1st birthday. Plus, we want Judah to see pics of us before Gotcha Day!

We will share more when we're able! We are excited to tell you more about him! In the meantime, we would cherish your prayers...here are a few requests!!

Judah: his health, his eating; pray that the Lord give us favor with our son on the very 1st day that we meet him, so he would not feel anxious or fearful! For his care-givers. For his birth family (no, we no nothing about them).
Micah: everyday he tells me he wants to go to China; he tells me the things he's going to share with and teach Judah; he loves to go an play in 'Judah's room' and prays for him often throughout the day; pray that the Lord would give Judah & Micah favor with one-another; that their brotherhood would develop quickly & deeply.
Alisa: the anxiety of going from one to two children; wisdom & grace to meet Judah's needs (he will not know English, and when he does learn, his cleft will impair his speech).
Vince: how to balance his ministry with adding a new child to our family, especially since Judah will have several surgeries and therapy the first year he is home with us.
Finances: we have a large sum we will owe very soon; we have two fundraisers planned for Sept; if we could complete Judah's adoption before Dec 31st we will be able to apply for our adoption tax-refund in 2011 (otherwise, we'll have to wait until 2012); the tax-refund will help us pay-off adoption debt sooner & cover co-pays/out-of-pocket med expenses

Thought I'd share something new I'm starting with Micah. He loves music. Seriously, LOVES music! (Those of you who know him personally are probably giggling right now.) Our family got to mingle with those families--at least for today! (read previous post to know what in the world I'm talking about)

We received our pre-approval for Judah's adoption today...day 13 of waiting! One day earlier than the estimated time-frame of 2-4weeks!! Very exciting! And, very humbling (since I was such a whiner last night).

We still have a long road of paper work & approvals ahead before we can bring Judah home. We still have to wait for our official referral approval and then travel approval...looking at about 4-5 months-total. Crazy. I know. Welcome to the world of Hague adoptions. We'd love to go get him before the end of the year, but that most likely, will take a miracle.

Changing subjects...

Micah had his 2-year check-up today. We are very excited to report that he's now in the 95th percentile for height, and off the charts in verbal skills. Our Dr just kind of sat in awe, watching and listening to Micah today -- he, of all people, understands how far our sweet boy has come!

Much to be thankful for!!

...I want to be one of those families.
You know, that family who's adoption paperwork always arrives earlier than expected. That family who finds a mystery check in the mail. Or a pile of cash on their doorstep.

I could go on and on...

I don't always think about being one of those families. Just sometimes.

We sent our letter of intent (requesting to move ahead with Judah's adoption) on July 28th. The estimated time-frame to receive China's response is 2-4 weeks. And we've been waiting 12 days. Prideful 'ol-arrogant-me just knew we'd hear something sooner. I don't know why I do this to myself! Why can't I just mind the typical time-frames, and chill??!!

Well, I know why -- because I stalk the date logs of hundreds of families on chat groups and blogs. And, some families (those families) have received their pre-approval in less than 2 weeks.

Guess it's not really that big of a deal. All the paper work will fall into place in God's perfect timing, according to His perfect plan. I trust that, and I really am at peace with that most-comforting truth! Maybe the legalistic side of me (which is obvioulsy dying a slow-death) thinks that being one of those families would suggest we've earned an extra-measure of God's favor. Kind of like my drooling-Basset Hound, who always demands extra attention when I don't have time. Or that pesky co-worker (back in my medical technologist-days), who always needed affirmation and approval when I wasn't in the mood.

But, God isn't like that.

He doesn't tease me with the notion that I could experience His love.
He never withholds it, and I don't have to earn it.
He simply loves me.
And He loves me completely, and fully.

So whether our pre-approval arrives on day 13, or day 33, I can trust the out-come to be perfect. And we may never be one of those families...but, we're His family. And for that we can celebrate on day 12, day 13, and day 33!

For the LORD God is a sun and shield;

i'm TWO!!

Today, to celebrate Micah's birthday, we covered all of his favorites...story time at Barnes & Noble, Chicken-play (Chick-fil-A), music at church...and also threw in a few presents, and lots of sweets!! We look forward to continue our celebration into the week-end with more friends & family!

Thank You to everyone who took a few minutes our of your day today to let Micah know how special he his...our family felt the love!!! We are so thankful for our family & friends!

Vince & I just spent an amazing evening with two Chinese men...angels...who walked us through Judah's adoption papers. There are so many words in Chinese that don't translate well to English, so they were able to express in greater detail the thoughts and facts included in the reports.

It was a blessing, as well, because they are believers. And it was very obvious they were touched by Judah's story...we shared several sad, sweet moments of silence as we thought about our little boy far-away.

Both of these men and their families are involved in a local Chinese church, and we look forward to getting to know their congregation...and, for Judah to get to know them as well!

Well, it's official...kind-of anyway!!
We are not Judah's family just yet, but today we submitted our EA (electronic acceptance) letter to the CCAA, requesting to pursue his adoption!!

I can only share a little about him for now. When we receive our RA (referral acceptance) from the CCAA, then we can share his photo, Chinese name, birth region, etc...it could take anywhere from 2-4 months to receive our RA.

About Judah...
He's almost 10-months old and has a cleft lip and palate -- both of which are unrepaired. He is beautiful...but, oh, so tiny! It's obvious from his measurements that his cleft palate is making his feeding very difficult. But that said, he's not too much smaller than Micah was as the same age.

We're working with The International Adoption Clinic here in Birmingham -- and there is also a Cleft Clinic at UAB Children's Hospital here as well, which will handle Judah's surgeries. We feel confident (and blessed) to have such wonderful resources right in our backyard!!

How soon could we go get him (assuming we're approved)?
We hope before the end of the year!

We were able to get the Chinese version of his adoption paperwork -- and two wonderful men (Malaysian & Chinese) are coming to our home tomorrow night to share their translation of the reports. Actually, the one doing the translation is the Chinese gentleman, who is also an research doctor!! He's already reviewed Judah's report and said everything looks good, but is still coming to discuss it in-person. I hope to get it on video for Judah!! He also told us that Judah's Chinese name is very special...we can't wait to hear the meaning!! I'm not sure who gave Judah his Chinese name -- possibly someone from his orphanage. We look forward to sharing it with you in the months to come!!

back in Birmingham...AL, that is

We're home! We flew in to the ATL airport then drove back to Birmingham. That ride was by-far the hardest part of the trip...we were SO tired. Micah did OK on our return flight -- the first 3 hours were a bit hellish, but he finally fell asleep.

Would we travel, again, with only a lap ticket for an almost-2-year old? YES! It was a little inconvenient, but so worth it to save the money!

Would we take an almost-2-year-old on an international trip again? YES!! It definitely adds a new dimension of mental exhaustion -- but the experiences we shared as a family were priceless (even though Micah won't have memories, only pics).

I'll share more about our London trip/my observations in the next several days as well!

About our China call...I will share more this week, once we've officially accepted our referral. Our family would cherish your prayers as we move forward in the process!!

Here are some thoughts from my time alone this afternoon...

Re 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne,
Re 8:4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel.
Ps 141:2 Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!

Your prayers and our prayers are acceptable and fragrant to God on His throne! There are symbols in Heaven that represent our prayers from the outer courts here below!

This is from Matthew Henry:
1. All the saints are a praying people; none of the children of God are born dumb, a Spirit of grace is always a Spirit of adoption and supplication, teaching us to cry, Abba, Father. #Ps 32:6, For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee.

2. Times of danger should be praying times, and so should times of great expectation; both our fears and our hopes should put us upon prayer, and, where the interest of the church of God is deeply concerned, the hearts of the people of God in prayer should be greatly enlarged.

3. The prayers of the saints themselves stand in need of the incense and intercession of Christ to make them acceptable and effectual, and there is provision made by Christ for that purpose; he has his incense, his censer, and his altar; he is all himself to his people.

4. The prayers of the saints come up before God in a cloud of incense; no prayer, thus recommended, was ever denied audience or acceptance.

a day of touring

Wednesday was our touring day of London. We visited St Paul's, London Bridge and Churchill's War Room. All were very fascinating and full of history!! Micah did great!! We were out from 8am til 8pm. Thurs & Fri we will "walk" again, and then return home on Sat.

Here's the bridge where we rec'd the call about our referral!! Will share more about that next week. We are very excited!!

Prayer Walking is...intercession on location, with information, in cooporation, against opposition, for glorification.

Intercession...Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.- Luke 18:1

On Location...Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.- Matthew 5:16

With Information...But, as it is written,
“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”––
these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.- 1 Cor 2:9-10
